SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Thomas Bach spoke in a press conference on Tuesday (9th October) after the final day of the 133rd IOC Session in Buenos Aires.

IOC president referred to recent report from Japan's Board of Audit saying Japan is likely to spend almost $25 billion to prepare the games or even more. The original estimate when Tokyo won the bid in 2013 was about $7 billion.

The IOC says that billions of dollars will be saved as they will be using existing venues.

"Unfortunately, the IOC has no influence on the reports made by the independent accountants of the TMG, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government or the Japanese federal government. This kind of reports you can see in many countries, where these accountants have different opinions from the government or from other stakeholders. We had similar situation two or three years ago, when there were studies on their way which came up with fantasy figures and which then could be put into perspective and making it clear what is really Olympic related and what is not", Bach said.

Bach also spoke about the refugees team that is expected to compete in Tokyo 2020.

"We also think that we owe them respect and we should not just invite a refugee athlete who in an Olympic competition can be humiliated by the performers. So, there should be a certain level because only with this certain level because only with this certain level also the signal of hope can be sent and the signal of awareness can be sent, the signal of hope to the refugees that despite having suffered from being a refugee, you can achieve something, you can compete", said IOC president.

He also referred to the steps to follow, after Rusada's reinstatement.

"So also in this respect the ball remains in the court of Russia and we can only encourage Russia to give this access (to information) which has been requested in order to clarify the situation, in order to take the necessary measures. Then, for the past, means that eventually sanctioning Russian athletes which may have been dropped, then the evidence will be provided", said Bach.

Buenos Aires is currently hosting the Youth Olympic Games, that will take place until October 18th.
