Story

French authorities plan to impose 24-hour alcohol bans in the centre of Lens when the city stages Euro 2016 matches, according to Assistant chief constable Mark Roberts, the officer who leads football policing in Britain (24th May).

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

French authorities plan to impose 24-hour alcohol bans in the centre of Lens when the city hosts European football championships and ticketless fans are being urged to stay away from the small northern city, British police said on Tuesday.

Lens will stage four games next month, including the British derby between England and Wales in Group B.

Northern Ireland has also qualified for the tournament so there will be a British police presence across France to assist their French counterparts in Lens and other Euro 2016 host cities.

The alcohol ban will run for 24 hours in Lens from 6 a.m. on June 16 for England-Wales.

Alcohol will be sold in the stadium but not in bars and stores in the centre.

Assistant chief constable Mark Roberts, who leads football policing in Britain, said other cities across France could restrict the sale of alcohol.

But there are fears about Lens being overwhelmed by ticketless fans because the city has a population of 32,000 while the Stade Bollaert-Delelis has a capacity of 35,000.

Roberts asked fans without a ticket not to travel.

Another potential flashpoint is the England's game against Russia in Marseille following fan disorder there during the 1998 World Cup.

But Roberts stressed that "undoubtedly there will be a massive police cooperation around that particular fixture."

Around 250,000 tickets have been sold for the tournament to Britons but police expect between 300,000 and 500,000 to travel to France.

1. 00:00 SOUNDBITE (English) Assistant chief constable Mark Roberts, leads football policing in Britain:

"I think it will be decided on each game on its merit. My understanding is that Lens will do that for each of the games just because being cognisant of the environment in Lens. It's a small stadium. It's a small fan zone. There isn't a great deal else to do beyond in Lens. I think the concern of the French is they wouldn't want tens of thousands of ticketless fans arriving in a venue that doesn't have the capacity to deal with them. So the message from them is if you don't have a ticket, don't travel."

2. 00:36 SOUNDBITE (English) Assistant chief constable Mark Roberts, leads football policing in Britain:

"Well, I think we're all aware of what happened in Marseille previously when they played there. That is a considerable period of time ago and behaviour of England fans has improved remarkably since that time. I draw the parallel with the game last year in Dublin - you recall that prior to that, when England played the game was abandoned after 18 minutes and there were concerns about that game. There was a police in place, the guard in Dublin, an outstanding police response to that and that passed off with no issues at all. So I think we need to be careful not to assume because there's been issues previously, we'll have issues again. Notwithstanding, we need to be aware of potential risks. We will work with the French to make sure that we can assist them to properly manage the England fans. The Russians will be doing the same and undoubtedly there will be a massive police cooperation around that particular fixture."

Story

Violent labour protests and strikes causing petrol shortages will not jeopardise the upcoming European Championship or other sporting events, France's interior minister said Wednesday (May 25).

About 1,500 people have been detained in recent weeks and hundreds of police officers have been injured while breaking up protests and dislodging protesters from fuel depots.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

The tensions and fuel panic have added to concern about security for Euro 2016, already facing what Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve called the double menace of violent Islamic extremism and hooliganism.

He said it will not disrupt protection of the June 10-July 10 championship, which will involve an unprecedented 90-thousand police, soldiers, private guards and others ensuring security.

That includes dozens of security officials from the other countries whose teams are competing.

Cazeneuve said border checks would be reinforced, noting that 18-thousand people have been turned away from French borders since Islamic extremist attacks in November on the national stadium, cafes and a rock concert that killed 130 people.

The government would not give estimates for the overall cost of the security.

It has previously said that 24 million euros are being spent on fan zones in the 10 host cities.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Switzerland will play in the European Championships for the fourth time this summer after qualifying as runners-up to England in Group G.

Vladimir Petkovic took charge of the Swiss following Ottmar Hitzfeld's retirement after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where they went out in the round of 16 to Argentina in extra time.

They went down 5-2 to France in the group stages and they have been drawn with Les Bleus again this summer.

"It's difficult. I believe all the young players that we have can have big tournaments. With Granit Xhaka we have a young player, also with (Xherdan) Shaqiri, Breel Embolo, I don't want to forget anybody. All the young players that we have must play in the tournament so that Switzerland might be successful. These are the players that make the difference. Shaqiri and Embolo are players who are extremely creative in attack, who also have a lot of power. Also Granit Xhaka, for example, in the midfield who holds all the threads in his hands. Many young players lead our game."

I don't know if the result will be positve or negative, we will see that. It's important that we start positively, that we put in a good performance. We have to get through the group. Story
In a remarkable statistic, since the break-up of the Soviet Union, Russia have only made it past the group stages of the European Championship on one occasion.
That was back in 2008 under Guus Hiddink, when Russia made it all the way to the last four.
Russia began their qualifying campagin under Fabio Capello, but a home defeat to Austria in July 2015 left them in danger of failing to reach the competition.
The Italian was promptly replaced by CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutsky, who continued his day-to-day club duties while coaching the national team.
Under Slutsky, Russia won their remaining four qualifiers to secure second place in their group an automatic spot at Euro 2016.
Russia open their campaign in France against England, a match that captain Roman Shirokov believes will be tough.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Roman Shirokov, Russia captain:
"There is no need to discuss England, it will be difficult as they are clearly one of the favourites at the tournament. It will be the first game of Euro 2016, which will set the tone for the competition. Having said that it won't define the entire tournament, in 2008 we lost our first match heavily and progressed, while in 2012 we won our first game convincingly and were eliminated."
Unfortunately for Slutsky and Russia, they will be without star midfielder, Alan Dzagoev, who suffered a broken metatarsal in the final game CSKA Moscow's season.
Following their match England, Russia can look forward to games against Slovakia and Wales.

Story

"Dealing with the pressure and expectation has kind of been a big part of what I've been a part of in the last five, six years. I mean, playing a lot for the national team, being at a club team that's constantly challenging, constantly trying to open new doors. So I just find a way. It's something that is part of my daily routine, my life and I'm looking to improve all the time in all aspects of the game and that's something that I'm enjoying doing."

"Yeah, I do it for every game, every game I've been a part of. The technology's changed. I'm able to do as much research as I can but, at the end of the day, a penalty is, it's up in the air. It all depends on that moment and whether you're ready to deal with the pressure."

"It's obviously a difficult draw but any championship is. But we feel confident with what we can do. I think the format's changed a lot this year as well and the top three can qualify out of four so we feel like we're one of the stronger teams of the group and we can progress."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic deliberated, tapped his fingers on the desk in front of him and let out a beaming smile.

The Sweden striker had just been asked if he had received an offer to join Manchester United and his actions spoke as much as his words.

Ibrahimovic is looking for a team for next season after leaving Paris Saint-Germain and has been heavily linked with United, which is set to hire Jose Mourinho as its new manager. Mourinho and Ibrahimovic got on well during their time together at Inter Milan.

He said he has received "concrete offers" from clubs in England, Italy and other countries - but didn't mention any team by name.

"I have taken my decision," Ibrahimovic said after a training session with the Swedish national team. He didn't elaborate.

Asked if Mourinho was the right man for United, Ibrahimovic said: "I think it's a great move. If you want action, you bring Mourinho. I believe he is the man to bring them back to the top, yes. Wherever he went, he won. He knows what he is doing. If you want to win, you bring Mourinho."

Ibrahimovic added that he is in regular contact with the Portuguese coach.

Ibrahimovic joined PSG from AC Milan in 2012. Before that he was in Barcelona on loan in 2010 and the move was made permanent the following year. He also spent three seasons at Inter and two at Juventus.

A serial winner of trophies, like Mourinho, Ibrahimovic said that, at 34, he is "only warming up."

"I have proved age is just a number," he said. "Everything is in your head. Whatever you want to do, you will do it. It's a mind game. If I want to make it, I'll make it. If I want to do it, I'll do it. I'm not worried at all."

Story

"No, we don't have Fabian Delph with us. Unfortunately he's strained a muscle in his groin area. So I've actually spoken to him and he's stayed in Manchester and I've made it clear to him that probably he won't be with us either in the final 23 unless we have injuries. So I've put him on a standby list actually which he understands and accepts. I don't think it's going to be a long-term injury so if I need him to come with us it's easy to call him and do so, but I have said to him with the situation that we have with the other 25 players it might be unlikely."

Even teams like Germany at their very limits. We are happy for the game and we still have in our mind the defeat that was inflicted upon us at Upton Park not so long ago. So we know if we are going to get a result tomorrow night we are going to have to be at our very best."
