In den ersten 18 Monaten ihres Lebens verlassen sich die Babykängurus komplett auf ihre Mütter, um zu überleben. Waisen benötigen eine spezielle Milchmischung für Kängurus, um diese entscheidenden Monate zu überleben. „Sie trinkt drei Flaschen am Tag, weil sie knapp drei Kilogramm wiegt“, so die Tierpflegerin Helen Stevens, die sich für die Non-Profit-Organisation Wildcare um Babykängurus kümmert, über einen ihrer Schützlinge. Helen verfüttert rund 45 Milchflaschen am Tag. „Dieses Jahr ist aussergewöhnlich streng“, so Stevens.

„Im letzten Geschäftsjahr kamen 378 Kängurus zu uns in die Pflege. Vor zwei Jahren waren es nur 270. Es gab seit März einen extremen Anstieg und dieser wird wahrscheinlich bis August und Anfang September anhalten“, sagt Wildcare-Präsident Philip Machin Ende August 2018.

Mit der extremeren Dürre nehmen die Anrufe bei der Wildcare-Helpline zu. Und dabei handelt es sich um ein teures Geschäft: Die Rehabilitierung und Erziehung eines einziges Babykängurus kostet 500 australische Dollar. Wildcare muss nun 40‘000 australische Dollar aufbringen, allein um die aktuelle Nachfrage zu decken.
