The South Korean market closed nearly 100 points down in its benchmark stock price index on Thursday.
The Dow Jones plunge buffeted the South Korean stock market, dropping the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) by 4.44 percent from its previous day's closing.
The stock market rout rolled throughout Asia, driving China's benchmark to a four-year low and sending indexes in Japan and Australia plunging.
Investors are wary of possible further US interest rate hikes. That will raise the cost of corporate borrowing and could drag on economic growth.

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Donald Trump, US President:
(Reporter off-camera: "What do you think of the market selloff today, are you concerned about that?")
Trump: "I think the Fed is making a mistake, they're so tight. I think the Fed has gone crazy. So you could say 'that's a lot of safety,' actually and it is a lot of safety. And it gives you a lot of margin, but I think the Fed has gone crazy."
(Reporter off-camera: "What about stocks, are you concerned about stocks?")
TRUMP: "No, I think it's good, actually, it's a correction that we've been waiting for a long time. But I really disagree with what the Fed is doing."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Christine Lagarde, IMF Managing Director:
"My recommendation is very simple and it holds in three words: de-escalate, fix the system and don't break it."
3. Reporter asking question
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Christine Lagarde, IMF Managing Director:
"We certainly advocate the de-escalation, sitting around the table and actually improve the system as it is so that it works better for all and so that it is fair in many ways. I think the issue of excess of dominant position, however they are fuelled, is not either particularly compatible with free and fair trade."
